Wood ashes contain Potassium Carbonate that turns to Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) when water is added. I think there’s enough moisture in all the usable exterior fibers, not just this cotton, to say that the chemical component within is Lye. Wood ashes also have a micro grit that will create great friction inside a fire roll. I want to stress that I am supposing here... I THINK, the reason why a wood ashes fire roll is the easiest of all is because of chemical reaction and friction. An oxide or other chemical is not always necessary to make cotton nor many many other exterior fibers fire ignite ignite. Friction alone (vigorous rolling), many times, is all that is necessary.
