In Episode 5 of the World Tour, we begin our first leg heading south — but not before taking a detour back into the Cascades.
Departing Boeing Field (KBFI), we loop around Seattle one last time before flying through heavy cloud cover in search of Mount Rainier. After finally breaking through the clouds, we circle the mountain before attempting a challenging short-field landing at 4S6 – Tieton State Airport, surrounded by rugged terrain and a lake at one end of the runway.
From there, we continue deeper into volcanic territory, flying past Mount Adams and getting an up-close look at the blast-scarred north face of Mount St. Helens. With daylight fading after a long day of weather-driven detours, we divert west and follow the Columbia River to the Pacific Coast, finishing the episode with a precision ILS landing at Astoria (KAST).
This episode highlights real-world decision-making in marginal weather, low visibility mountain flying, and the flexibility required when plans change in the air.
