Alaska snow crab harvest virtually halved following population collapse in a warmer Bering Sea
The snow crab harvest in 2022 is at its lowest level in more than 40 years, a measure taken to conserve populations that appear to have crashed amid a period of warmer temperatures in the Bering Sea.
The Bering Sea has seen severe losses in winter ice cover in 2018 and 2019, resulting in a smaller size of a cold pool on the bottom favoured by baby crab.
The warmer temperatures and greater predation on immature snow crabs by cod are likely contributing to the population decrease.
Snow crab also appear to have travelled much farther to the northwest and into deeper waters when the sea bottom warmed.
The Bering Sea's crab and fishery are collectively the most profitable in North America.
