Single Ladies Beyonce + Lal Pili Ankhiyan by Rajnigandha Shekhawat Cover Mashup

My new mashup / cover is a mix of my most requested Rajasthani folk song called Lal Pili Ankhiyan and Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put a ring on it). The Rajasthani folk song is about a girl telling her man that he can give her all the angry glaring looks but she is least bothered and not afraid of his temper in the least. The song has a fun vibe to it and at the same time shows the attitude of a girl who has no time for the angry tantrums of her man. This song reminded me of Beyonce’s Single Ladies which is pretty much saying the same thing, that she is done with her man who should have known better than to take her for granted. While Single Ladies is intense, Lal Pili Ankhiyan is leaning towards teasing and fun. I matched the mention of the ring in both the songs to make a connection and the rest of the song fitted pretty quickly.


We have used the sounds of Khadtaal, a staple musical instrument of rural folk musicians from around Jaisalmer’s desert area in my home state of Rajasthan, made simply of 2 tiny wooden pieces that are banged together by their deft hands to create wonderful rhythm patterns. I found an instrument similar to this in Barcelona called Castanet that does the exact same thing and sounds very similar! Prominent use of Murla has been done to enhance the intrinsic Rajasthani experience, along with other Indian instruments like Tabla and Mridamgam sounds.


I have again shot this video in my own house in Jaipur, where I am able to freely deck up like brides do in Rajasthan, without being worried about curious onlookers that would otherwise collect in the presence of a camera crew anywhere else. But shooting at home meant having to make sure the pet dog stayed out of the frame, which was a task, given how cute he is and he clearly wanted to hang around and watch from close quarters hence 1 AD’s job was to simply engage him elsewhere till we shot this video!


The song is arranged and shot by Amit Ojha, who I have come to depend on for all my work related to Rajasthan. He has immense experience when it comes to the sounds and visuals of Rajasthan. Not only do I get a great sound but he packs in great visuals as well! He never judges my ideas and never says no to anything I suggest, and usually goes the extra mile to one-up my crazy!
