A formation dubbed the "Port Burwell Grand Canyon" is a sight to behold along the Lake Erie north shore in Ontario, Canada and is one of many examples of ongoing major erosion in the area. Its origins likely arise from an underground aquifer giving rise to a new spring-fed stream. This results in a "spring-sapping" process by which the overlying sediment layer collapses in a sinkhole-like fashion as it keeps eroding the land further and further upstream. Record lake levels have likely played a role in shifting the elevation of the water table in the local area and have also contributed to major shoreline erosion.
NOTICE: Out of respect for adjacent landowners, I will not be responding to requests for the exact location of this formation and will be deleting comments referencing location specifics. The underlying conditions are very unstable and the location is not suitable for high traffic. As always, posted no trespassing areas must be obeyed.
