Stepping onto Ugandan soil for the first time, Claire Harroun, an electrical engineering undergraduate student at the University of Notre Dame, began a summer internship that would redefine her world. Join her as she reflects on this transformative experience at the Bethany Land Institute (BLI). This video chronicles Harroun’s journey of discovery – from navigating a new culture to the profound lessons learned while working alongside BLI’s staff and trainees.
Harroun shares how this immersive experience opened her eyes to the practical application of integral ecology and deepened her understanding of global issues. Her time in Uganda, funded by the Institute for Social Concerns, was a testament to the power of stepping outside one's comfort zone, embracing a new community and witnessing firsthand how faith, ecology and development can create lasting, transformative change.
In this video, you’ll discover:
My first impression of arriving in Uganda and starting my internship.
What it's like adjusting to a new culture and working environment abroad.
How BLI's community-based approach brings the principles of Laudato Si’ to life.
The personal challenges and unexpected growth from living and learning in Uganda.
How this first-time international experience shaped my education and future goals.
