Dhaniakhali saree of West Bengal is celebrated for its compactness and durability. Weavers use a special technique where weft threads (the horizontal threads) are twisted before being woven in. These twisted threads are usually dual-colored or thicker than the body threads.
When woven, these twisted threads pop up against the flat fabric, creating a serrated, braided texture that looks exactly like a plait of wheat stalks or a braid of date palm leaves. This raised texture is not just a visual design; if you run your fingers over a Dhaniakhali pallu, you can physically feel these "grains" or braids.
