Long before medieval knights charged into battle, the Byzantine Empire fielded the Cataphracts—elite cavalry units clad in full-body armor, mounted on equally armored horses. These shock troops dominated the battlefield with disciplined wedge formations and overwhelming force.
Used from the 6th to 12th centuries, cataphracts played a decisive role in battles like Lalakaon (863 AD) and under generals such as Nikephoros Phokas, combining mobility, armor, and tactics in ways that stunned their enemies.
