Across mainstream political parties, many of the arguments we hear being put forward as solutions to the problem of gendered violence are those that rely on carceral logics, which we seek to question, resist and dismantle. Hate crime laws have been recently proposed as one of such 'solutions', despite perpetuating state violence and failing to bring about safety. This panel discusses the need to engage with non-carceral solutions to patriarchal, racist and other forms of violence.
Speakers:
00:00 Mo Mansfield (Moderator - Abolitionist Futures) - Introduction
05:43 Sarah Lamble (Bent Bars Project) - Hate crime laws are not preventative or address the needs of victims and survivors; they obscure the causes of harm and expand the state's capacity for punishment.
15:03 Luke Smith (LabourGRT) - Hate crime legislation is anti-poor, diverts attention from the ways hateful discourses are [re-]created, and potentiates prisons and policing.
22:25 Nim Ralph (Trans Abolitionist Futures) - The material impact of advocating for hate crimes as a 'symbolic' demand.
32:20 Jun Pang (Remember and Resist) - Engaging our communities to unpack and unpick the false promise of hate crime legislation, and imagine abolitionist alternatives to carceral responses.
39:52 Q&A
Co-hosted by Abolitionist Futures, Pluto Press, Black Protest Legal Support, Northern Police Monitoring Project, and Remember and Resist.
