India-EU Free Trade Deal Set to Be Signed, Brings 2 Billion People Into Mega Trade Pact

Описание: India and the European Union are on the verge of sealing a landmark Free Trade Agreement at the India-EU Summit on January 27, 2026, marking one of the most significant trade diplomacy moments of the decade. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit India as the chief guest for Republic Day, underlining the political and strategic weight of the deal.

The agreement brings together nearly two billion people and almost a quarter of the global economy. It spans goods, services, investments, digital trade, and supply chains, making it one of the most comprehensive trade agreements India has ever signed. After years of stalled negotiations over tariffs, agriculture, and regulatory standards, strategic urgency has pushed both sides to finalise the pact.

For India, the biggest gain lies in tariff elimination. Duties ranging from 12 to 16 per cent on textiles, along with tariffs on pharmaceuticals, electronics, gems and jewellery, leather goods, and auto components, will be phased out — giving Indian exporters a decisive edge in the European market.

For the European Union, the prize is deeper access to India’s rapidly growing consumer and services economy, especially in sectors such as machinery, chemicals, aircraft, high-value wines, diamonds, and professional services.

Sensitive agricultural sectors including dairy, rice, spices, and poultry have been deliberately kept out of the agreement, reflecting a pragmatic approach to protect livelihoods and avoid regulatory conflicts.

The FTA also liberalises telecom, finance, e-commerce, and digital trade, creating new opportunities for Indian IT and services companies in Europe, while easing market entry for European technology firms in India.

Beyond economics, the deal carries major geopolitical significance. It helps India reduce dependence on China, diversify supply chains, and hedge against rising protectionism, while positioning India as a key Indo-Pacific partner for the EU in a fragmenting global trade order.
