STORY BEGINS

Narration - Torrential rains during the month of Sawan had flooded the low-income neighborhoods; the market was bustling with crowds, and Nandini had arrived at the vegetable market alone, carrying a shopping bag.

Nandini (26): (Distressed) Oh God, this rain is too much! My feet are already caked in mud, and on top of that, the prices of green vegetables are skyrocketing today. The bottle gourd that was selling for twenty rupees a kilo yesterday is being sold for eighty rupees a kilo today.

Vegetable Vendor (40): (Sternly) Hey lady, stop yapping so much here! If you want to buy vegetables, do it; otherwise, move along.

Nandini (26): (Angrily) Hey *Bhaiya*, why are you snapping at me like that? You people are running a daily racket of daylight robbery. Are people supposed to eat grass and weeds just to fill their bellies now?

Vegetable Vendor (40): (Shouting) Then don't eat grass! Go eat poison instead. Buy it if you want, or else get lost!

Nandini (26): (Frustrated) I swear to God, the arrogance of this man! "Weigh out half a kilo of potatoes, please."

Vegetable Vendor (40): "Hand over twenty rupees, and here—take your potatoes."

Narration - Nandini moves on with her half-kilo of potatoes when she spots Jaggu’s cart.

Nandini (26): (To herself) "Oh... there’s Jaggu’s cart. Look at the crowd swarming it; the aroma is so tempting it pulls you in from afar. If only a day would come when we could feed our children mutton curry to their heart's content."

Narration - As Nandini walks further, she runs into two neighbors, Sunita and Rekha.

Sunita (32): (Concerned) "Oh, Nandini! Have you come to buy vegetables in this muck too? I swear, vegetable prices are sky-high today."

Nandini (26): "Yes, sister, it’s a necessity. Rain or storm, we have to step out regardless."

Rekha (30): (Distressed) "Oh, don't even ask—the prices are making me dizzy. Inflation has gone through the roof; what can one even say?"

Sunita (32): (Reassuringly) "You’re absolutely right, sister, but what can be done? We have to do it to satisfy our hunger!"

Rekha (30): (Resigned) "True. We might forgo other things, but we can't exactly ignore the kids' demands."

Sunita (32): (Laughing) "That’s for sure! Anyway, tell me, what are you buying?"

Rekha (30): (Excitedly) "Oh, we’re getting mutton! We’re going to feed the kids mutton curry and naan to their heart's content today! Come on, Nandini, you should join us!"

Nandini (26): (Surprised) "Really? Should I? Alright, let's see."

Narration - The two women walk on with Nandini and reach the mutton shop, where the shopkeeper is busy packing some meat. Nandini hesitantly asks the shopkeeper for the price.

Nandini (26): (Timidly) "Bhaiya... what's the price of the mutton?"

Mutton Seller (45): (Curtly) "Mutton is four hundred rupees a kilo!"

Nandini (26): (To herself) "If only a day would come when I, too, could afford to buy mutton like this for my children..."

Sunita (32): (Persuasively) "Oh, Nandini, just buy a little bit then!"

Nandini (26): (Despondently) "Oh Sunita, what can I say! Even if I buy two hundred and fifty grams, it’ll cost a hundred rupees. But honestly, that small amount isn't even enough to properly temper the spices for a curry..."

Rekha (30): (Reasoning) "You're absolutely right about that; so, just buy more then."

Nandini (26): (Declining) "No, no, I’m not buying it. Forget it! Besides, my kids don't really like mutton all that much anyway."

Rekha (30): (Sarcastically) "Yeah, right! Liking something depends on the strength of your pocket; when there’s no money in the pocket to buy mutton, how can one even develop a taste for it?"

Nandini (26): (Sadly) "It’s a bitter truth, but absolutely true... when the pocket is empty, even one's preferences turn away."
