Have you ever seen such a strange-looking lens mounted to an Olympus OM camera?
This is a Vemar 12mm f8 fisheye lens. Fisheye lenses achieve huge angles of view by using optics that dramatically distort perspective, creating pronounced foreshortening effects.
Today we’re loading this OM-1n with Kodak TMax P3200. This high-speed film will give us the latitude we need to shoot with this fisheye lens’s slow f8 aperture both indoors and outside.
This is actually a T-mount lens, which allows it to attach to a variety of cameras with the appropriate adapter.
The Vemar has just 3 aperture settings, and they are spaced quite widely apart.
Without the circular lens shade installed, this fisheye does not cover the full 35mm frame and shows very soft edge resolution.
Mounting the shade protects the exposed front element and also crops the image to a circle, though the angle of light can affect the size and position of the rounded frame.
Resolution is still quite limited, but this lens is more about creative effect than technical optical performance, and we had a blast shooting this roll.
Do you have a favorite fisheye lens?
