The relations between India and Nepal date back to more than thousands of years ago. They are very systematic and strong bounded, which can be seen in their socio-cultural, economical, religious and political similarities.















































According to the Ramayana, Lord Ram was born to King Dasharath and Queen Kaushalya of Ayodhya (in present-day Uttar Pradesh state of India) in the Tretayuga. In the same period, Sita, the daughter of King Janaka and Queen Sunaina took birth in Janakpur province of Mithila (in present-day Nepal). Over the years, Rama and Sita were tied in the holy bond of matrimony and this laid the foundations for strong and healthy relations between India and Nepal which continues till date.















































Today, India and Nepal share a unique relationship of friendship and cooperation characterized by open borders and deep-rooted people-to-people contacts of kinship and culture. There has been a long tradition of free movement of people across the borders. The two neighbors share similar ties in terms of Buddhism with Buddha’s birthplace Lumbini located in present day Nepal. They also have close bonds through marriages and familial ties, popularly known as Roti-Beti ka Rishta.
