This is an Elizabeth I hammered silver sixpence, struck during the reign of Elizabeth I. These coins were hand-struck over 400 years ago, making every example unique.
Often recognised by the facing bust of the Queen and the royal shield on the reverse, the sixpence was everyday money in Tudor England. Coins like this would have passed through markets, taverns, and even the hands of soldiers and merchants during one of the most important periods in British history.
Hammered coins were made by placing a blank silver flan between two dies and striking it with a hammer — no machines, no uniform edges, just raw history in metal.
Condition, mint mark, and portrait type all affect desirability, but even worn examples are prized for their age and connection to the Tudor world.
Would you keep this as found, or carefully conserve it?
