"How can I properly summarise a musical birthday greeting for my publisher at Schott in 60 seconds? I have attempted to compose a type of polka zwiefacher with "compressed" threes and anticipated emphases -- in other words, an attempt to allow a Darmstadt sausage to perform a Bavarian dance. The title of the piece harks back to a memorable meeting which took place exactly fifty years ago at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. I had only just fled from the confines of the Augsburg monastery and was eager to experience all that contemporary music had to offer. During a break of a lecture by Stockhausen, I was sitting frustrated in the improvised canteen opposite an extremely tall and friendly looking man with a plate of sausage and potato salad in front of him: he was only eating the salad and left the sausage at the side of his plate. As I was still hungry, I asked him if I could eat the sausage to which he assented willingly. This was how we got talking to each other.
"What do you do for a living?" he asked me. "I am going to become a composer", I replied. "That's interesting. I am going to become a publisher." These three sentences marked the beginning of my long friendship with Peter Hanser-Strecker, my publisher at the renowned music publishing house Schott.
Fifty years after this meeting, I have composed this piece for him in which I rail against everything they attempted to drum into us in Darmstadt: Music is not to be enjoyed!
Music for children is taboo!
Thirds, octaves and fifths are forbidden!
There is nothing to laugh about in CONTEMPORARY MUSIC!
I have called my dance "Darmstädter-Wurstzwiefacher" according to a motif from my son Carl Amadeus to commemorate the meeting with CPHS." (Wilfried Hiller)
