Leg four of our Nova_Canton Trough Research Expedition has produced one of the most exciting finds of the project so far.
Heather Stewart talks through the moment an incredibly rare hooked squid, 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘦, came in and interacted with one of our landers as it descended to the seafloor.
This species is one of the largest deep-water squids and is famous for having two enormous photophores on the ends of its arms, which emit bright bioluminescent flashes to confuse and startle prey. These are the largest photophores found in nature.
