🏫 25 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (Japanese Technology) Installed in a School
Working System, Need, and Benefits – A Complete Article
🔹 1. Introduction
In today’s time, schools are not only centers of education but also institutions with strong social and environmental responsibilities.
Due to daily activities involving students, teachers, toilets, canteens, and drinking water facilities, a significant quantity of wastewater is generated every day.
To address this challenge in a sustainable manner, a 25 KLD capacity Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has been installed within the school campus. This STP is based on Japanese Technology (Johkasou System), known for its efficiency, compactness, and eco-friendly operation.
🔹 2. Why is a 25 KLD STP Required in a School?
The main reasons for installing an STP in a school campus are:
Safe treatment and disposal of daily generated wastewater
Compliance with government and environmental regulations
Prevention of water wastage
Creating awareness among students about water conservation
Maintaining a clean, hygienic, and safe campus environment
A 25 KLD STP is considered an ideal capacity for a school with approximately 800–1000 students and staff.
🔹 3. Working Principle of the STP
This STP operates on a biological treatment process using natural bacteria.
(a) Influent – Entry of Wastewater
Wastewater generated from school toilets, wash basins, kitchens, and other facilities enters the STP through a dedicated pipeline network.
(b) Sedimentation & Separation Chamber
In this chamber:
Heavy solids such as sand and grit settle at the bottom
Floating matter is separated at the top
👉 This process reduces the load on the downstream treatment units.
(c) Anaerobic Chamber (Without Oxygen)
In this chamber, bacteria work in the absence of oxygen to break down organic matter.
Benefits:
Reduction in organic waste
Lower sludge generation
Effective odor control
(d) Aerobic / Moving Bed Chamber
This is the most critical component of the STP.
Oxygen is supplied through blowers
Bacteria grow on special media and work efficiently
Significant reduction of BOD and COD takes place
At this stage, the wastewater becomes almost clear.
(e) Secondary Sedimentation Tank
Biological sludge settles at the bottom
Clear treated water is collected from the top
Settled sludge is recirculated back into the system to maintain efficiency
(f) Disinfection / Chlorination
In the final treatment stage:
Harmful bacteria and viruses are destroyed
Water becomes safe for reuse
(g) Treated Water Outlet
At this stage, the treated water is suitable for reuse within the campus.
🔹 4. Reuse of Treated Water
The treated water from the 25 KLD STP is reused for:
✔ Irrigation of school gardens
✔ Toilet flushing
✔ Floor and campus cleaning
✔ Groundwater recharge
👉 This results in 70–80% savings of fresh water.
🔹 5. Key Benefits of the STP for the School
✅ Environmental Protection
Untreated wastewater is not discharged into drains
Soil and groundwater remain protected
✅ Water Conservation
Reuse of treated water
Reduced dependency on borewells and municipal supply
✅ Compact and Silent Operation
Space-efficient design
Odor-free and noise-free operation
✅ Low Maintenance Cost
Reduced sludge generation
Simple operation
Minimal manpower requirement
✅ Educational Value
Students learn the importance of water conservation
Provides practical exposure to sustainable infrastructure
🔹 6. Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
For smooth and efficient functioning of the STP:
Regular inspection of blowers
Weekly visual checks
Periodic sludge removal
Monitoring of chlorine dosing
With proper O&M practices, the STP can operate efficiently for 15–20 years.
🔹 7. Conclusion
The installation of a 25 KLD Japanese Technology based STP in the school campus not only ensures safe and effective wastewater treatment, but also strengthens:
Water conservation
Environmental protection
Awareness among students
This system is a significant step toward Sustainable Development, setting an example of responsible infrastructure planning in educational institutions.
