My wife and I bought a nearby abandoned house in Japan. In this video we tour the outside of the property, the 5 sheds full of junk and tools. There's even a tractor, not to mention two cars. In part 2, we explore the inside.

The house itself is a traditional-style "minka/kominka" farmhouse located just outside of Tokyo, in Ibaraki. The farmer who owned the house passed away 5 years ago, and his children chose not to inherit it.

Abandoned properties are very common in Japan as the population ages and young people move away from rural areas and farming, property prices depreciate and people don't want to take care of the property or pay taxes on properties they don't use.

There are some risks to buying a place like this. For example, the house could be beyond salvaging due to termites or structural damage from earthquakes. Most Japanese people are not interested in such properties (often for good reason!), but we felt the rewards (larger than average land size, privacy from neighbours etc.), outweighed the risks, particularly as you can purchase abandoned properties very cheaply compared to normal land - sometimes even for free!

The purpose of this (and forthcoming) video(s) is to document the process of buying and renovating an abandoned house, identifying the risks and hidden costs, and see how easy or difficult it really is to buy abandoned property in Japan.

It is going to take time and money to make this house liveable, but we are looking forward to the challenge!
