Composition: Jake "Virt" Kaufman
This fabulous piece of music was created by Jake on Kwakfest 27.09.2013 as GM MIDI file in just one hour! And guess what, all 128 General MIDI instruments are used at some point. As unbelievable as it may sound, it is even more unbelievable that no rendered version was available until now. I discovered that this composition exists just two days ago and, without further ado, decided that it is far too awesome to hide it from the world. So here it is, four and a half minutes of pure bliss for all of us to enjoy.
Technical details:
Since this song is stored as GM MIDI file, it plays back and sounds acceptable on every GM compatible device. But even the greatest MIDIs tend sound a bit dull no matter if they are played back on high-end hardware or not, if no further precautions are taken. To breathe life into a GM file is indeed an art in itself.
For this recording I used two GM sound modules, a Roland SC-88 and a Yamaha MU50, played back Jake's file in unaltered form on both of them and made an equal blend of both streams in my audio workstation. [They just perfectly complement each other.] Then I put a Dimension-type chorus effect on them to optimize the stereo field and sent the result through my beloved tube preamp to add warmth to the sound. In the final step I applied a small amount of algorithmic reverb and used a set of mastering tools together with automation to make it shine.
Side note:
Although it took Jake just one hour to write the MIDI file, it took me about four times as long to fire up my gear, experiment like crazy and make everything sound right. Jake, if you read this, you really are the king of MIDI.
