In today’s episode of Full Throttle Automotive, we’re showcasing one of the most iconic muscle cars of all time—my 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, now brought into the modern era with a 6.2L LS3 engine swap and automatic transmission upgrade.
The Backstory
From the factory, the 1970 Chevelle SS was never equipped with a modern LS engine. Instead, it came during the absolute peak of the muscle car era, offering some of the most legendary big-block V8s Chevrolet ever produced. This build is a true restomod, blending classic American muscle with modern performance, reliability, and drivability.
Original 1970 Chevelle SS Engine Options
The 1970 model year set the benchmark for muscle cars, offering several high-output cast-iron V8s:
• 402 CID V8 (marketed as 396)
• L34: 350 horsepower
• L78: 375 horsepower
• 454 CID V8 (LS5)
• Factory rated at 360 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque
• 454 CID V8 (LS6)
• Rated at 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque
• One of the most powerful factory muscle car engines ever built
LS3 Restomod Conversion
This Chevelle now features a GM 6.2L LS3 crate engine, a popular upgrade in high-end restomod builds that delivers modern performance while preserving the timeless Chevelle SS look.
• Modern Power
• LS3 setups typically produce 480–525 horsepower, often surpassing the original LS6 thanks to modern engineering, fuel injection, and performance tuning.
• Improved Drivability
• Paired with a modern automatic transmission, upgraded braking, suspension, and steering components, this Chevelle offers vastly improved reliability, handling, and everyday comfort compared to its original configuration.
• Modern Features, Classic Feel
• Many LS3 restomods—including builds like this—often integrate upgrades such as modern air conditioning, digital gauges, Bluetooth audio systems, and refined interior touches, creating the perfect balance between classic muscle and modern convenience.
This build represents what Full Throttle Automotive is all about—respecting automotive history while pushing performance into the present.
