Feel the unmistakable sound of the Spanish guitar, the spirit and energy of the foot work, the art and delicacy of flamenco dancing, the power of the flamenco box drum, and above all, endless sensations and unique experiences
Despite the countless films, concerts and art exhibitions I see each month, there’s nothing that moves me as much as seeing a flamenco show. It’s not only the combination of the invigorating music and percussive footwork, but also the wide array of deep emotions it manages to express. Flamenco covers anything from lament to nostalgia to passion but also humour. It’s basically a condensed version of life.
Duende, the trance state every flamenco dancer aspires to reach?
If you’ve heard of flamenco, you’ve probably also heard about duende. The concept of ‘duende’ has acquired an almost mythical status, especially among non-flamenco artists. But what is it exactly? I asked Magdalena Mannion, yet another stunning flamenco dancer and together with Yinka, one of the co-founders of dance trio Dot Dot Dot Dot.
Magda: ‘There’s this bit of a stereotype about duende in flamenco which is this idea of spontaneity, a moment of passion. That’s true to a certain extent, but performances are often improvised and the level of technique required to be able to improvise is very high. Personally I only feel I’ve reached the magic when I feel I’m actually dancing and not merely executing steps. I feel like that has more to do with getting into a state of concentration, almost like a kind of meditation where you’re not thinking anymore and you’re letting yourself do what you know how to do and let yourself being taken. It’s like a shared energy between all the performers on stage and everyone knows and feels where the energy needs to go. Everybody starts pushing and pulling, and eventually you … “aaaaaaaah”, you get there .’
