This comprehensive work, often presented in two volumes but structured as three books within a single compilation, draws heavily from earlier occult texts, including Cornelius Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Pietro d’Abano’s Heptameron, and other rare manuscripts.
Book I explores Natural Magic, covering the occult properties of animals, minerals, and plants; alchemy (including the Philosopher’s Stone and transmutation); numerology; astrology; and talismanic magic.
*Book II delves into Magnetism and Cabalistical Magic, discussing the use of divine names, the Kabbalah, summoning and binding spirits, constructing magic circles, and performing ceremonies of consecration, invocation, and conjuration. It includes detailed descriptions of good and evil spirits, their seals, and associated rituals.
*Book III provides biographies of notable magi, cabalists, and philosophers, such as Zoroaster, Albertus Magnus, John Dee, and Paracelsus, though its authorship is debated and may have been added as filler.
Barrett’s work made obscure occult knowledge accessible, influencing figures like Eliphas Levi and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as well as the broader Victorian occult revival. Despite criticisms of plagiarism, its detailed illustrations, rare source material, and practical instructions make it a cornerstone of ceremonial magic and Western esotericism.
