Carney “absolutely” misled Canadians on Gordie Howe International Bridge deal: Scheer

Описание: Canada’s opposition house leader Andrew Scheer is calling out Prime Minister Mark Carney for "misleading the Canadian people" amid controversy stemming from details in the Canada-U.S. contract for the soon-to-open Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Though he said Thursday he should have been clearer in his initial messaging, Carney previously claimed 100 per cent of the toll revenue would be collected until Canada was repaid the $6.4 billion construction price tag. The official contract, however, states 50 per cent of the revenue will go to the U.S. for the next 15 years.

“[Carney] told Canadians [they] would be paid back first, that the construction and debt servicing costs would be factored into this,” Scheer said in a Thursday press conference, adding, “Now we know that just wasn't true. Mark Carney saying that he could have been clearer is the closest we'll get to a Liberal admitting that they deliberately misleading Canadians.”

The opening of the bridge – which is set to take place Friday – was originally planned as a joint celebration, but after being threatened with new tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump earlier in the week, that is no longer the case. Canada will now hold its own event on event in Windsor, Ont., while a separate ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in Detroit, Mich. on Monday.
