About Urk

Urk is a former island and fishing village in the Netherlands, located in the province of Flevoland on the eastern edge of the IJsselmeer. Until the 20th century it was completely surrounded by water, but land reclamation projects turned it into part of the mainland. Despite that physical change, Urk has retained a very strong sense of island identity.

The village has a long maritime history and is still one of the most important fishing communities in the country.
