Grand Canyon National Park, in the northwest corner of Arizona, is the 15th place in the United States to be named a national park. The park's most famous attraction is the Grand Canyon, a gorge in the Colorado River often called one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. In 1979, UNESCO declared the Grand Canyon a World Heritage Site.
Many travellers put hiking the Grand Canyon from rim to rim on their list of "things to do once in a lifetime." A "rim-to-rim" hike usually means walking from the south to the north rim or from the north to the south rim.
Throughout almost 24 miles, hikers go down below the level of the rim, cross the mighty Colorado River, and then climb back up the other side. It's challenging, exciting, and a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The hike can be done in one day or over a few days, including camping or a stay at a lodging facility. Most of the time, it's done in one direction, with hikers taking a pre-booked shuttle bus back to the side where they started.
If you want to hike from South Rim to North Rim, take the South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River and then the North Kaibab Trail for 21 miles. When hiking from the North Rim to the South Rim, you'll take the North Kaibab to Bright Angel Trail, which is 24 miles long.
Bright Angel Trail is recommended if you come from the North Rim, even though it is longer than South Kaibab Trail (Bright Angel is 9 miles, and South Kaibab is 7).
Bright Angel Trail has more shade and water along its path, which can be lifesavers when the sun is high in the sky later in the day. On the other hand, there is neither shade nor water on the South Kaibab Trail.
If you leave the South Rim very early in the morning, the South Kaibab Trail will get you to the Colorado River quicker before it gets too hot. But you'll still have to go uphill for 14 miles after you reach the Colorado River.
So, plan your day accordingly and make sure you start early enough to avoid being on the trail when it is very hot in the middle of the day.
Over 13,000 feet of elevation change, extreme temperatures, and exposure make it hard for even experienced hikers. But for those who are prepared, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This is a considerable hike, so you'll want to prepare for it in advance by doing some preparation work and getting in shape.
