I was doing a routine Google search for my own name when a paid advertisement caught my eye — a crypto recovery company claiming to help scam victims get their money back. Out of curiosity, I clicked. Within minutes, it became clear I wasn’t looking at a legitimate recovery service at all, but something far more dangerous: a fake operation using the name “Mayer Brown,” impersonating a real international law firm, and targeting people who have already been financially devastated.
THE AD THAT SHOULDN’T EXIST
The first red flag was the Google Ad itself. Crypto recovery is one of the most abused scam niches online, yet this company was paying to appear at the top of search results. The website looked polished, professional, and authoritative — exactly what someone desperate for help would want to see. But when I opened the live chat, the first question they asked wasn’t about evidence, timelines, or law enforcement. It was simple: how much money did you lose?
That question alone told me everything. This wasn’t about recovery. It was about qualifying a victim.
IMPERSONATING A REAL LAW FIRM
As I dug deeper, something far more serious emerged. The website used the name “Mayer Brown,” a globally recognised law firm with offices around the world. The problem? This site had no legitimate connection to the real firm whatsoever.
Even worse, the website featured professional headshots and profiles lifted directly from real Mayer Brown lawyers — senior partners and associates based in Hong Kong — but paired them with completely different phone numbers. This is not branding confusion. This is identity theft.
I verified each individual. Real people. Real lawyers. Real firm. Their images and reputations were being used to give a fake crypto recovery scheme instant credibility.
THE ILLUSION OF LEGITIMACY
The site claimed to be based in Hong Kong, listing a prestigious office address. Yet basic checks revealed inconsistencies everywhere. Broken map images. No verifiable company registration matching the claims. No direct email contact. Communication pushed almost entirely through WhatsApp — a classic tactic used by offshore scam operations to stay untraceable.
They also claimed years of experience and thousands of successful recoveries. But the domain itself was only months old, registered for a single year. Timelines don’t lie — and neither does infrastructure built overnight.
HOW RECOVERY SCAMS REALLY WORK
This is the cruelest layer of fraud. Crypto recovery scams don’t target random people. They target victims — people already traumatised, ashamed, and desperate for a way out. They offer hope where none realistically exists.
Once crypto is gone, it’s gone. Blockchain transactions are irreversible. No private company can “unlock wallets,” “reverse transfers,” or secretly retrieve funds. Anyone claiming they can is lying — and counting on the victim not knowing how crypto actually works.
The recovery scam doesn’t need to succeed technically. It only needs you to believe long enough to pay another fee.
WHY THIS MATTERS
This isn’t just about one website. It’s about how easily criminals can impersonate trusted institutions, buy Google Ads, and intercept victims at their most vulnerable moment. It’s about how the same people who lost money once are being lined up to lose it again — not through greed, but through hope.
And it’s about accountability. Because the real Mayer Brown law firm had no idea their name and their lawyers were being used this way — until now.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
This investigation is ongoing. The impersonation has been documented. The individuals whose identities were used are being contacted. And the digital trail behind this operation is being preserved.
If you’re watching this because you’ve lost money, hear this clearly: anyone asking you for money to recover crypto is almost certainly trying to scam you again.
