Ruth Levin. Born in Moscow, daughter of Leibu Levin, a well-known Czernowitz born Yiddish actor, singer and composer. The family immigrated to Israel in 1972. Studied with Nechama Lifshitz and Benjamin Zemach. Recepient of the Hersh Segal Prize for Yiddish culture, 1997, 2002. She has performed in concerts and festivals throughout Europe and the USA.
In 2006 she published the Anthology Leibu Levin. Word and Melody: 49 songs to poems by 21 Yiddish poets, with her prologue and biography of the composer.
Among her theatre roles were Mirele in Itzik Manger's Hotzmekh Shpil (1986) and the role of Esterke in Manger's Di Megile (1987); in film a Yiddish singer in To Live Again (2007).
Solo programs: Secret guests (Yiddish poetry in music); Yortsayt (poetry and songs of the Holocaust), A Graceful Willow Tree (Yiddish songs by and about women). Together with Avishai-Alexander Fisz created the Cabaret Du undzer shlimazl, undzer shtern with Itzik Manger's songs, and The Blue Cat Cabaret, with theater and street songs from the 30-s. In 2017, she created the one-woman show Janina and the Beast based on a Sutzkever story, with music by Moti Shmitt.
Editor on Jerusalem Yiddish radio and Radio Yiddish Pour Tous.
She also researched and recorded a collection of poems and songs from the ghettos and concentration camps in Transnistria. Ruth’s Russian dramatic roles are Miriam in Golem by G. Trestman, and Etl in Late Love by V. Mukharyamov (based on the story of Bashevis-Singer). Ruth writes poetry in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian; and translates Yiddish and Hebrew literature. Accompanied by a Alexei Belousov. Awarded by several national and international prizes, he is performing as a soloist and giving master classes throughout Israel, South America, China, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Italy, Swiss and other countries, since 2006 he is the artistic director of “Guitar Gems” - International Classical Guitar Festival & Competition in Netanya, Israel. In the recent years he is the artistic director of L. Luthier Contest - International Classical Guitar Festival & Competition in Bratislava, Slovakia, and of A. Matyaev International Classical Guitar Festival & Youth Competition in Kirov, Russia, and since 2018 г. – also the artistic director of Louis Ignatius Gall International Guitar Festival in Nordhorn, Germany.
Polina Shepherd (Skovoroda) grew up in a Russian Jewish home where songs were frequently sung at celebrations. When living in Tatarstan and studying at the State Academy, she played Russia′s first klezmer band after Perestroika, and toured the world with her own quartet Ashkenazim. Her current work covers vocal music from large scale choirs to duets. Leads four choirs, teaches, performs, collaborates with bands, soloists, ensembles, choirs and bands internationally.
