Former doctor's wife also receives probation for her role in deadly Pensacola pill mill

Описание: ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman was sentenced Friday for her role in a deadly pill mill operation in Pensacola off of University Parkway.

Beverly Wilson received 10 years probation and will serve her time in Virginia.

Wilson is the wife of Dr. Bill Wilson, who was also sentenced last week for the same crimes to 10 years probation and a $5,000 fine. Their son is also facing the same charges.

All three were charged in 2021 after a two-year investigation.

Barbara Bruni says the sentence isn't sufficient for causing the death of her son Tristan, who was prescribed a mix of oxycodone, Xanax and Ambien before dying the next day.

"Thank god your harm to this community was stopped. You ruined so many lives," Bruni said Friday in court. "People are not here today, people who died because their addiction started at your doors."

"I personally think it's unfair that you guys moved to Virginia to do your community service work and probation, because this is where you did the harm," she added. "This is where I think things need to get healed."

Many across social media are questioning the Wilsons' sentence.

Prosecutors explained there's evidentiary issues throughout the years that prevented a heavier penalty.

"It is very sad in this situation," said Paul Gillespie with the State Attorney's Office. "This is the best plea we have to go forward in this case given the facts and circumstances."

Beverly Wilson has been represented by five different attorneys in the case.

Judge John Miller explained why he felt it was time to move on.

"This is a conditional plea. It's conditioned on the fact that the court accept the sentence in the plea agreement," he said. "It's not like I'm imposing a sentence after a jury verdict."

"For reasons we've discussed, it has a long history of litigation where the state doesn't feel comfortable in going forward with it," he added.

Bruni says no penalty will bring her son home. She offered a new path forward on Friday.

"Today marks a closure. A time that allows us as individuals and in this community to close this chapter, sweep up the ashes and truly move on," she said. "We do need to move on, as our loved ones who've lost their lives would want us to do."

James Wilson will appear in court next Thursday.

It's not clear whether he'll agree to the same sentence. He has not entered a plea.

The state attorney's office says they'll release more information after Thursday's hearing.
