Did you know that some gemstones have a property called "fluorescence," meaning they glow when exposed to UV light? Some stones (ruby and alexandrite, for example) have such strong fluorescence that even the UV rays from the sun can cause the stone to glow! This glow is usually caused by trace elements, such as chromium, within the stone. All rubies and alexandrites glow, and some sapphires, diamonds, spinels, garnets, opals, and rarely, emeralds can also have fluorescence properties.
