Around 1996, video rental consumers grew tired of walking into video stores only to find out all the tapes of the latest hit movie have already been rented out....some chose alternative titles, other went "video store hopping" in hopes the movie they are looking for will be available somewhere else.

Revenue sharing companies like Rentrak allowed video stores to bring in many more copies than they could've in previous years. In 1998, companies like Blockbuster arranged direct deals with movie studios that resulted in even more copy depth at the store level.

This explosion of copies satisfied demand quicker...some stores bringing in upwards to a hundred copies of just 1 movie with rental revenue split between the retailer and the movie studio.

Guaranteeing a movie to be in stock was simply just a gimmick, and stores would often run out of copies anyways. Anyone who ever worked in a video store or blockbuster can attest to the fact that movie rentals were extremely popular in the 1990's, and shelves were often pretty bare on Friday and Saturday nights.
