Hi everyone! In this video I talk about how to loosen a tight and rigid embouchure when playing high notes by practicing an exercise by Geoffrey Gilbert, in which we will begin with the high note embouchure on the low note to feel the looseness and ease there, and then slightly turn up the air pressure to allow the high note to sound.

This exercise is not to be confused with lip flexibility in which we move the lips forward from the low to high notes, which is what we will do most often in the context of playing music when moving from low to high, but rather, this exercise is to begin to feel the sensation of having the lips forward on a high note without tensing the lips which can be tempting in the beginning :). At the end, I will discuss how to troubleshoot different problems that may arise when practicing the suggested exercise.

To summarize:

For playing high notes softly: pucker lips forward keep corners neutral and keep a small aperture opening in the lips. Engage ab muscles to push the high notes out. Avoid tensing the jaw, lips, or throat to produce the note. Just use healthy air and the proper embouchure shape to make the note sound. Use cool air when playing soft.

For playing forte/loud high notes: Frown, push top lip forward, use slightly bigger aperture, (avoid pressing lips against teeth still), and use warm fast air (engage abdominals) to make the note sound.
