This is a 30 minute discussion between three Swedish Christian leaders who have been working for decades to see new vibrant communities of Jesus followers birthed in Sweden. Hear their perspective on what God is up to in Sweden and how to pray strategically for the nation.
Below are some notes from the discussion:
• There is decline in most denominational churches in Sweden. Currently, each year more churches are closed than opened.
• While numerous recent surveys show that more than 60% of Swedish citizens self-identify as Christians, yet paradoxically less than one Swede in five claims to be religious.
• Religion is considered a very private subject to most ethnic Swedes.
• There has been a tremendous surge of immigrants to Sweden in the last 30 years. Today 20% of the population in most Sweden cities is foreign born... both Christian and Muslim background immigrants.
• The biggest church growth has been immigrant churches in Sweden (Syriac, African, Latin American, etc)
• Secularization in Sweden is a consequence (at least in part) of the former oppressive policies and practices of the Swedish State Church and monarchy.
• Younger ethnic Swedes have almost zero knowledge of the Gospel and Christianity.
• Perhaps a consequence of Sweden being one of the “happiest” countries of the world is that many people feel no daily 'need' of God.
• Change is happening since secularization is leading to emptiness. Harvest will come!
• Pray for workers for the harvest, both national and from abroad.
