A dreamy morning at Banzai Pipeline witnessed more clean open barrels before winds tested qualification hopefuls and some of the world’s best at the Lexus Pipe Challenger Presnted by Billabong.
Reigning Olympic Gold Medalist Kauli Vaast put on a Backdoor clinic for the day’s best performance alongside jaw-dropping disappearning acts from Taro Watanabe, Mikey McDonagh, Ian Gentil, and more. Lucas Silveira dealt with the first taste of CT power, besting back-to-back CT Pipe Pro victor Barron Mamiya, who also advanced, with Opening Round notables Joey Johnston and Benji Brand providing local magic all their own. Current No. 1 Eli Hanneman held firm, but Brazilian frontrunners Mateus Herdy and Samuel Pupo added to the domino effect of qualification hopefuls facing elimination.
Now, the stacked field is dwindled to just 32 with women’s Round of 32 ready for more action pending the next call, Monday, February 2 at 7:15 a.m. HST. It only gets more stacked from here and the points couldn’t be more valuable.
