Tennessee to execute Harold Wayne Nichols Thursday for 1988 murder of Karen Pulley

Описание: Tennessee is set to carry out the execution of death row inmate Harold Wayne Nichols Thursday morning.

Nichols was sentenced to death for the 1988 rape and murder of 20-year-old Chattanooga State student Karen Pulley. The victim’s family is in Nashville Thursday to witness the execution.

Karen Pulley was attacked and killed inside her family's Brainerd home in 1988. During police interviews, Nichols confessed not only to her murder but also to several other rapes in the area.

Pulley’s older sister, Lisette Monroe, told NewsChannel 9 that while Nichols’ death will not bring closure, her family still “wants and needs to see justice happen.”

In a video released by Nichols’ attorneys, he said he got a chance to speak with Pulley’s mother more than 30 years ago.

“The day that I was sentenced, there was a woman who stood up and said, ‘Can I get a chance to speak with him, face to face?’" Nichols explained. "It was Karen Pulley’s mother. And we went to the jury room. Just me and her. She told me, ‘I forgive you cause I don’t want to carry that with me.'"

Karen Pulley’s family added: “Karen was an angel on loan from heaven, and she should not have been taken away in this brutal, violent way. She had so much more life to live and others to impact.”

Nichols was sentenced to death in 1990 and was originally scheduled for execution in 2020. That execution was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The delay also raised questions about Tennessee’s execution protocol, including a 2022 review that found drugs used for multiple executions had not been properly tested.

Nichols’ attorneys say he has spent decades rehabilitating and taking responsibility for his actions. In a statement, they said they are “deeply saddened and gravely disappointed” that the execution is moving forward.

Governor Bill Lee reviewed Nichols’ case earlier this month and announced he would not intervene. Nichols is scheduled to be executed Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.
