Above Chamonix (France), the famous Mer de Glace (the largest French glacier) has retreated 2.7 km in 15 years and lost 250 meters of thickness. Modeling the movement of glaciers on their bedrock can help to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. The study focused on the ice mills and their deformation.
A glacier mill is a well-like shaft within a glacier, carrying the melt water and rainwater from the surface quite often down to its base level.
A glacier that melts is a water tower that disappears.
The study was carry out on November / December 2020.
