The morning of our wedding, I stood in the bridal suite at the City Event Venue, adjusting my veil for the hundredth time. My sister Lina buzzed around me, fussing over my train and cooing about how perfect everything looked.
“Ersilia, you’re absolutely glowing,” she said, stepping back to admire her handiwork. “Julian is going to lose his mind when he sees you.”
I smiled, but my stomach churned—not from nerves, but from the secret I’d been keeping. I’d invited Edric Sloan to our wedding. My ex-boyfriend. The man I’d dated for two years before meeting Julian.
“Lina,” I said carefully, “I need to tell you something.”
She paused, lipstick halfway to her mouth. “What’s wrong? You look pale.”
“I invited Edric.”
Her eyes widened. “Edric? As in, your ex Edric? The one Julian can’t stand hearing about?”
“It’s not what you think,” I said quickly. “I just… I needed closure. We ended things badly three years ago, and I thought having him here—seeing me happy with Julian—would finally put that chapter to rest.”
Lina set down the lipstick. “Does Julian know?”
I hesitated. “I mentioned it.”
“You mentioned it? Ersilia, what exactly did you say?”
“I said I was thinking about inviting some old friends, and he said whatever made me happy was fine with him.”
“But you didn’t specifically mention Edric’s name.”
