Emergency medical service workers in central Vermont will soon have a new, streamlined way to keep up with their certifications, thanks to a partnership bringing training under one roof at the Central Vermont Career Center (CVCC).
Starting in November, EMS workers from Washington, Orange, and northern Windsor counties will be able to complete required recertification courses at CVCC instead of traveling to local fire departments or out-of-state programs.
“It’s going to reduce some redundancies and allow our emergency responders to train in the classroom,” said CVCC Superintendent Jody Emerson.
State officials and UVM Health said high turnover rates across the EMS workforce are a reason why the state is in need of more EMS workers. Leaders hope the move will help recruit and retain personnel while strengthening ties between students and seasoned professionals.
For EMT trainees like Ace Kunkle, the opportunity represents more than just a career. “I want to be one of those people who helps other people’s families,” Kunkle said.
Hunter Cadlrette, another student, echoed the sense of purpose. “I can become closer with more people and also help people in need,” she said.
Barre City Deputy Fire Chief Joe Aldsworth, who also chairs EMS District 6, believes the change will build vital connections between students and working EMTs.
“They’re our future. They’re our bridges into the future,” Aldsworth said. “When I retire out, or other people like myself, they will fill our shoes and our ranks. So we would create our mentorship.”
Courses for paramedics are hybrid, while the rest are in person.
