Baby vision problems: Parents raising awareness after video

Описание: BRIDGETOWN, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- They say they never expected this video to take off as it has, but these Bridgetown parents met up with us at their Opticare Eye Doctor's office, so we could see what they did, with our own eyes! First up, cuteness alert, because its hard not to notice now how Piper, who's now 11-months-old, is growing and thriving, but mom says just a short time ago that wasn't the case. "When she wasn't crawling, she wasn't even attempting, we figured out something was wrong," said Piper's mother, Jessica Sinclair. What was wrong, was an undetected vision problem, which Dr. Josiah Young says, is quite common. "One in four kids have an undiagnosed vision problem before they get into school, said Dr. Young. An eye exam showed Piper could see far away, but not close up. "What we usually use is a retinocope, said Dr. Young. And we shine the light into the eyes and based on that reflection is we can actually determine what there prescription is." That prescription, based on Pipers first reaction about a week later when the family went to dinner, appears to be pretty accurate. Mom and dad posted a video on Facebook, and a short time later after some vision sites began to share it. "It was at that point about 800,000, and it just kept on going, once it hit to the millions, it just wouldn't stop, said Pipers father, Andrew Verdusco. So what started as just a curiosity has now made this family, and this medical team, feel Piper has a special purpose. "I just wanted to see how she was with her glasses on, seeing our faces, and that's sort of how it came out, said Andrew. One of the reasons they wanted to share Piper's story has to do with raising awareness of infant vision problems. If you don't have medical insurance and are concerned about a cost for an exam, there is a national website you can go to and certain providers are listed there, Dr. Young is one of them, and they will give a no-cost eye-exam for infants not yet a year old. "If the child's not developing normally, one of the first things you can look at is vision," said Dr. Young. We are all born with some farsightedness. Piper's was just outside normal limits.
