I went backpacking with my kids and some close friends last summer. Desolation Wilderness, California. It was the kids' first time backpacking and roaming around high country. Like any trip, it had its complications (e.g. forgotten hiking shoes; occasional kid drama). But, in general, it was the slice of peace I'd been needing. No phones (well...maybe an audiobook and some grateful dead in the a.m.). More accurate, we had no internet. Like depressurizing. I sometimes want to be unreachable.
For two days, we lounged around on huge rocks framed by snow tipped mountains. Massive in scope. You could feel the distance. Like a silent orchestra. A hum. Far off ice patches seemed to have a story of their own. Familiar. And, there were trees: solo, giant, dried...some kind of pine species with croocked branches, like fingers, reaching for the sun. Shadows cast on hot red rock. Grass patches between bolders. Loud birds. My buddy knew their species. I lack knowledge.
Getting there was intense. A bit. Lot of elevation gain. But even the 6-year was charging it. The adults--two dads and an honorary grandpa--were hauling a lot of gear. The six-year old's dad had a chiwawa in a shoulder sling. Nancy. He was already overloaded and had an aching back [we're all old enough to suffer through old injury sass talk]. So we took turns carrying nancy. I think the endorphins of petting her and getting little licks was worth the extra weight.
The point: It was our final day. The procession of dogs and children and scattered dads was peaceful but sad. End of the trip blues. Then, suddenly, honorary grandpa veered in a totally different direction. He was a ranger in the area, so we followed along. Like sheep.
And.......he was onto something good. The space was gorgeous. Spicy pine smell. Spray from waterfalls. The water bubbled and danced and made a full range of sound. I enjoyed being silent and closing my eyes and hearing the water and feeling that high mountain sun on my face. It was lulling me to sleep. And I thought: hey, this is a nature sound bath! If I listened carefully, I could hear whispering in the water's sound. I was captivated and, as a result, immediately went about recording the water from a few different angles--my own revere broken by art obsession. At some point, the group realized we were captured in some kind of trance and needed to return to the trail. Begrudgingly, we hoisted packs and trudged away.
A month Later, back in the UAE, I had the waterfall on the living room T.V. I was also playing ambient looping guitar and a couple singing bowls. The water and the music seemed to meld. A sedating synergy.
Anyways.....
