Continuing the replacement of in-ground garden area with sub-irrigated planter boxes (SIPs) or self-watering planter. This time, the build is bigger. This means different techniques. For one, the build is done square. This technique is applied to some parts of the build as the lumber is uneven and this characteristic has not been corrected. So the legs at the bottom are brought in line and the tops may be uneven (slightly). The frame to hold the water and soil is aligned square to the legs.

A raised planter has its advantages. An analogy is, the laundry basked will not be used if its in an inconvenient location. The same with gardening. Having to bend and cultivate heavy soil and water plants daily is inconvenient. Happy to say a raise sub-irrigated planter box turned the brownest of thumbs green.


Using tips learned from the previous build, the sides were constructed better. The major tip is that pressure treated wood should be used immediately and before drying to prevent twists, bows and other defects related to drying.


The build was a good one, and the majority took place over two days. There were some issues, such as the sub-frame failing. There is a cough going around and therefore, picking up supplies was ruled risky and instead what was on hand used.


The construction method of the top trim was a problem. Two U shaped sections were constructed and then joined. Handling larger pieces was challenging with pocket hole joinery and that in itself exposes the risk of introducing errors. An error (saw slip from fence) in cutting resulted in about a 1/2 inch gap was fixed by splicing.


Hopefully, the experience presented helps in decisions being made and knowledge of pitfalls gives confidence for those attempting the build.
