William Eddy is a survivor and defector hero of the tragedy that occurred in the high Sierra mountains during the winter of 1846 and 47 of the infamous Donner Reed party and wagon train to California. Both his wife and children were among those that did not survive. As a grieving husband and father he blames the author of the book that suggested the route taken by the party for their deaths. This book written by Lansford Hastings was titled "The Emigrants Guide to Oregon and California." In the book the route taken was only mentioned in one sentence as a possible alternative route to the one already established and in use. Eddy has vowed to kill Hastings but does not. Instead in 1848 he finds a new wife has 3 children and settles in Petaluma California and is later divorced. He was married a third time and died in Petaluma in 1859 and is buried in San Jose California.
Lansford Hastings was an American explorer and Confederate soldier who was attempting to guide people to California in an effort to acquire the region from Mexico. He died at age 51 at Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands while conducting a shipload of settlers to his colony at Santarém Brazil.
