I will explain how Aduhelm or Aducanumab works and the compare the pros and cons of Aduhelm (AKA Aducanumab) treatment. Aduhelm is an antibody that targets amyloid beta plaques in the human brain. Antibodies are present in your blood and tissue all the time and help you fight infections alongside white blood cells. The white blood cells of the brain are microglia and astrocytes. Microglia and astrocytes grab ahold of the antibodies (AKA Aduhelm) and break down the amyloid plaques which should improve Alzheimer's disease pathology. Aduhelm does reduce amyloid plaques, but the controversy is around the cognitive data. One study showed great cognitive data the other did not. There are many factors which may have caused this to happen, but currently it is unclear if Aduhelm will help people with Alzheimer's disease. It will likely help many people, but not all with Alzheimer's disease.
