You see rail cars carrying containers all the time, or even just whole truck chassis. But why?
Turns out it's an enormous savings over trucking alone for cross-country shipments many times, significantly reducing fuel costs, and reducing labor needed to transport goods. Think about it - a train from LA to Atlanta could carry hundreds of containers, but for the same trip by truck, each one requires its own driver and fuel.
But there are downsides - including being a bit slower, and also harder to reach more distant communities that aren't rail hubs.
