Films used in this episode:
Rubber, 2010, dir. Quentin Dupieux
I remember being so excited when I heard of Quentin Dupieux’s 2010 film “Rubber”. The movie about the murderous exploits of a telekinetic tire as it roamed around blowing people’s heads up.
When I finally saw “Rubber”, however, I found myself pretty disappointed. All the stuff I’d hoped to see was there, the gory deaths and the bizarre antagonist. But it was also accompanied by some kind of meta commentary, as we simultaneously watch an audience watch the events from afar.
The film adopts this philosophy of nonsense, it opens on an explanation that sometimes things happen for no reason.
By the end of the film, this odd narrative device merges, and almost takes over, the main story, and it ends in some kind of esoteric mess.
I just wanted to watch a schlocky movie with a ridiculous concept, and instead I got a preachy self-aware but forgettable movie.
I see it as a cautionary tale about keeping your movie concept pure. In the end, the movie we got was just not as good as a movie about a telekinetic Tire.
