Hello, my friends! If you want to like, comment, share or subscribe I'll be very happy!
With this video I take you with me to Milan, in my beloved city to visit the Church of San Cristoforo, protector of pilgrims and travelers and the sick, one of the most evocative and loved by the Milanese, a real treasure of history, religion and culture, also the scene of some legends.
This area of Milan is very particular and suggestive.
We understand that we are on the edge of the city border, however Porta Ticinese, the Darsena and also the center, are not so far away.
And in this area as you will see, you can have special encounters, such as a level crossing and a passing train, or beautiful graffiti and street art of a very famous Italian comic, "Diabolik"
The Church of San Cristoforo, a real architectural jewel, is located on the left bank of the Naviglio Grande Canal, the long and important communication route created in the Middle Ages.
For those arriving in Milan, the profile of the splendid bell tower, remodeled in 1400 with the addition of a cone-shaped spire and terracotta frames unique in Lombardy, was a "lighthouse" in the middle of the countryside and signaled that the city.
This splendid religious complex is one of the rare examples of a double church, i.e. two churches built in different eras, subsequently side by side and aligned on the facades, whose dividing wall was demolished in 1625 thus forming a single room with two naves.
The oldest church, dating back to 1192, is the one on the left, in Romanesque style, called the "Primitive Church", remodeled in 1300, apparently built on an even older site.
Precious frescoes adorn the splendid apse and the walls of the Church while the beautiful coffered ceiling covers the original triangular beamed ceiling.
The church on the right was instead built at the end of 1300 thanks to the will of the Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti, hence the name of "Ducal Chapel", in response to the popular vote of devotion to the Saint for the sudden cessation of the plague epidemic of 1399.
Also in this church, in Gothic style, there are notable frescoes, precious wooden statues and a painting of the Madonna and child.
The two facades also stand out clearly. The one on the left, characterized by a large rose window and the one on the right, of a simpler style.
There are also frescoes on the facades and Visconti and municipal coats of arms.
But the Church seems to have collected in itself numerous stories and legends. From the departure of the Lombards to the first Crusade in 1099, to the romantic meeting wanted in this place by Ludovico il Moro with his future wife Beatrice d'Este who came directly from Ferrara, to the communication to the population of the defeat of Federico Barbarossa by the Lombard League .
And then the legend of San Cristoforo, according to which he was a giant who wanted to put himself at the service of the most powerful man. After serving kings, emperors and finally the devil who told him that Christ was the most powerful, he decided to convert. He chose to live on the river bank to help travelers go to the opposite bank. One night a child woke him up to be ferried and Cristoforo put him on his shoulders but his weight became stronger and stronger until they almost collapsed. But Christopher succeeded in his intent and the boy revealed to him that he was Christ and announced his martyrdom. After receiving baptism, Christopher went to preach in Lycia and there he suffered martyrdom.
This church is much loved by citizens, so much so that it has a very long line of reservations for weddings, both for its importance and beauty and for the particular romantic scenery in which it is located.
As always, I want to thank you for the friendship and affection you always show me through your comments.
Thank you very much with all my heart!
