Why do hangovers make us sad? About 22% of drinkers have psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, after drinking. A major predictive factor behind this phenomena is rumination or repetitive negative thinking (Tellez-Monnery et al., 2023). Essentially, we dwell on all the things that went wrong when we were drinking, the words and actions we regret, and this makes us sad and worried.
