Exodus 33 comes right after the golden calf (Exodus 32). Israel had broken the covenant almost immediately after receiving the Law. Though God forgave them, something changed. God promised the land and sent an angel to lead them but His presence would not go with them.
Israel could still have victory, prosperity, and the Promised Land but without God. That’s why Moses pleads not for guidance from a distance, but for God’s intimate nearness, active involvement, and relational companionship. For Moses, the wilderness with God’s presence was far better than the Promised Land without it. He refused a version of blessing that excluded God Himself. In the Old Testament, God’s presence was limited and conditional.
In Christ, it becomes permanent and personal. Jesus is the ultimate answer to Moses’ prayer God not just going with His people, but dwelling within them.
