The Federal Police’s riot police are faced with demanding operations that require overcoming roadblocks and difficult terrain. With the new Unimog U 530, the units are now ideally equipped to tackle these tasks. Police Commissioner Marco Seidl explains how specially equipped vehicles, including a powerful front loader and a multifunctional crane, make the job easier.
If the Federal Police’s riot police are alerted, men and women can face a difficult operational scenario. “We often have to deal with roadblocks and barriers that are intended to complicate our operations,” says Police Commissioner Marco Seidl (37).
And when roadblocks have to be cleared so that the federal police can proceed to the scene, for example, robust special vehicles are used in Germany. However, logistical tasks such as the transport and installation of police technology are also becoming increasingly extensive and must be handled by specialists with their own equipment.
There are ten riot police units in the country. Between 600 and 800 men and women work there. And each of these departments has a very special Unimog in its fleet; from this year on, a brand new Unimog.
“The new Unimog U 530 will be available in general service in 2024.
All Unimogs are equipped with a Hauer front loader (1.8 tonne lifting capacity), which can also be equipped with a pallet fork. “The practical thing now is that we can remove it in just a few minutes when it is not needed. The axle load of the new Unimog U 530 has been designed so that it does not need the counterweight of the rear-mounted Palfinger crane (PK 18502 SH).
The crane can be extended to 12.40 m and then lifted another 1,180 kg. In addition, this crane is equipped with a rope winch and a multifunctional bucket.
But the front loader is essential. Officers often have to level or pave field or forest roads so that their approaching colleagues can make further progress over difficult terrain. The HPC’s centrally mounted drum rope winch (65 m steel rope) has a pulling force of 5 tonnes; with the deflector sheave, even a pulling force of 10 tonnes can be applied.
A specially designed rescue support for the crane is mounted at the rear for even better stability. New: All vehicles are equipped with Lexan glass, i.e. plastic glass, which is extremely robust (“impact-resistant”) and protects the officers from stone throwers and other impacts equipped.
