Three Protagonists. One Shared Mission.
In the bustling streets of Flagstaff, three key players shape the story of everyday travel: the cyclist, the pedestrian, and the driver. Each plays a vital role in keeping our roads safe—and together, they are the protagonists of safer streets. This short video highlights how these everyday travelers interact and reminds us that no matter how we move, we are all in charge of safety.
Flagstaff’s roadways see a complex mix of commuters, students, tourists, and residents. In just five years, over 10,000 crashes occurred in the MetroPlan region, resulting in 57 fatalities and more than 2,300 injuries. Intersection crashes made up 44% of fatal and serious injury collisions. These numbers aren’t just data points—they represent real people, lives impacted, and futures altered.
MetroPlan’s Regional Transportation Safety Plan is built around a vision of zero fatalities. Through targeted strategies and data-driven actions, MetroPlan is working to reduce crashes involving vulnerable road users—especially pedestrians and cyclists, who continue to face higher risks.
The most common crash factors? Speeding, failure to yield, and inattention. That’s why MetroPlan champions Safe Streets, Safe Speeds, Safe Vehicles, and Safe People.
Every road user has a role to play. Cyclists must follow traffic laws and ride predictably. Pedestrians should cross at marked crosswalks and remain visible, especially at night. Drivers must slow down, watch for others, and always yield when required.
This is our shared street. Our shared story. And our shared responsibility.
Let’s come together to make Greater Flagstaff’s roads safer for everyone.
