“Hey Bulldog” is one of those Beatles songs that immediately caught me off guard. From the first notes, it sounds like it could be the theme song to a great action or crime TV series — dark, punchy, and full of attitude.
This track is driven by a heavy, almost menacing piano riff from John Lennon, who also delivers some of his most playful and gritty vocals here. Lyrically, it’s classic Lennon: surreal, sarcastic, and not overly concerned with making perfect sense — it’s more about feel, rhythm, and delivery.
Recorded during the Yellow Submarine sessions, Hey Bulldog flew under the radar for years, which is surprising considering how strong the groove is. Ringo’s drumming locks in perfectly with the piano and bass, giving the song a muscular, forward momentum that feels tougher than most people expect from The Beatles.
This one reminded me just how good the band was when they leaned into groove and swagger instead of polish. A seriously cool track that deserves way more attention.
